Public Schools Athletic League

The Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) administers interscholastic athletics for New York City public schools, including boys’ and girls’ fencing. Its official fencing pages publish schedules, division standings, statistical leaders, entries, playoff brackets, championship history and rules. The boys’ 2025-26 fencing season includes varsity competition among schools across Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, with divisions such as Brooklyn/Staten Island, Manhattan/Bronx, Manhattan/Queens and Queens. PSAL’s fencing regulations set the playoff threshold at a .500 or better record. Tied division leaders fence a one-bout A-versus-A play-in to decide the division winner, and the playoffs are a one-day single-elimination event that awards Team Foil, Team Épée and overall Team Champion titles. The rules include a protest process referring to the USFA rules manual and discipline provisions for ejections, forfeits and brawls. PSAL also publishes eligibility rules that apply uniformly to New York City public-school student-athletes and place responsibility for compliance records with each school’s athletic director. The league identifies separate fencing coordinators for boys’ fall fencing and girls’ spring fencing.
